What if the future of product ownership begins AFTER the purchase?
Henry Ford worked to democratize the automobile.
His goal was to make cars affordable enough that ordinary people could own one.
More than a century later, Ford is trying to democratize something else:
Customization.
The company has launched a new program that lets buyers finance factory-backed modifications before they even take delivery.
Whether it’s an 810-horsepower Mustang, a desert-inspired Bronco, or a trail-ready F-150, customers can roll those upgrades into their purchase, keep the warranty intact, AND have the whole shebang serviced through Ford’s dealer network.
I recently wrote about Slate Auto, whose EV truck was designed from the ground up as a platform for customization.
The two companies are flooring for the same destination, from opposite directions.
Slate begins with a new, simple vehicle and invites owners to build it into something personal.
Ford begins with a maximally established vehicle and makes personalization dramatically easier.
Both recognize the same huge shift.
Ownership in 2026 no longer ends at the bill of sale.
Now it evolves.
I wrote in I Need That how products become more compelling when customers can shape them around their own lives. Personalization has a way of manifesting psychological ownership.
Every carefully chosen accessory, colour, upgrade, or feature transforms “A vehicle” into MY vehicle.
There’s another interesting business angle here.
As electric vehicles reduce many of the maintenance and repair opportunities dealers have traditionally relied on, personalization could become an increasingly important part of the ownership experience and a meaningful source of future revenue.
Whether that proves to be the strategy remains to be seen.
One thing already seems clear.
The companies creating the most excitement aren’t simply selling products anymore.
They’re selling platforms people can continue making their own.
