Your Local Store Just Got a Whole Lot Closer

Shopify’s new DoorDash integration gives independent retailers something that once belonged almost exclusively to Amazon and the biggest chains: fast local delivery.

Not long ago, same-day delivery felt sort of miraculous. (Remember the first time you ever experienced it from Amazon? Whoo-oooh!)

And if you wanted to ever compete with that, you needed warehouses, delivery fleets, sophisticated logistics, and ridiculously deep pockets.

That changed this week.

Shopify announced a native integration with DoorDash that lets eligible U.S. merchants connect directly from the Shopify App Store.

Products, inventory, and orders stay inside Shopify, while DoorDash handles local, same-day delivery and marketplace exposure. There are no separate product uploads or inventory systems to maintain.

For now, the integration is available only in the United States.

But I expect Canada and other countries to be next. DoorDash already operates here, along with Australia and New Zealand, while its international subsidiary Wolt serves more than 30 countries across Europe and parts of Asia. And DoorDash competitors will be itching to get in.

What’s really cool isn’t so much the integration as the massive shift in customer expectations.

A few years ago, ordering anything you wanted for dinner, from almost any restaurant in one app felt futuristic.

Now imagine ordering dinner…

… and adding a pair of running shoes.

Or a handcrafted birthday gift from a local artisan.

As same-day delivery networks expand beyond restaurants, buyers increasingly switch from thinking about where to buy something to how quickly they can get it from you.

That’s a totally different buying process.

For independent retailers with a physical storefront, the local customer suddenly gets much more valuable, and reachable.

If your inventory is sitting five miles away AND shows up in an app your buyers already use, it can start competing with national distribution centres.

This connects directly to I Need That.

Products can become more compelling, even when only the buying experience improves. Faster delivery cuts friction, adds convenience, and gives folks a new reason to choose you over another seller.

The product could be identical.

But it’s a better experience for the win!
