Reddit may be the most powerful ad platform Shopify merchants ignore. That may be about to change.
Last week Reddit rolled out its Shopify integration worldwide, making it much easier for merchants to sync product catalogs, install tracking, and run Dynamic Product Ads directly from their stores.
The setup is super easy:
Install the app.
Connect your accounts.
Your catalog, pricing, inventory, and product images automatically stay synced. Reddit then serves shoppable ads in feeds and even inside conversation threads.
The reported performance numbers are pretty impressive.
Reddit cites research showing a $12.52 return for every advertising dollar spent in North America and roughly 7x ROAS for retail advertisers in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Early Shopify merchants have reported results ranging from 4x to 7.7x ROAS.
Those numbers deserve some attention. And a healthy dose of skepticism.
I’ve run Reddit ads myself.
One thing I found pretty frustrating was the targeting.
You can carefully select highly specific interests and communities, only to discover in the detailed reports (if you can find them) that many impressions were delivered in places and regions only loosely related, if at all, to what you specified.
Not unlike what Google does to you by blatantly ignoring the exact match rules you set.
Reddit’s explanation is that those users have historically shown interest in the topics you’re targeting. Scouts’ honour!
Maybe.
But I’ll stay cynical for now.
Those results seem way more algorithmically expanded than any advertiser would expect.
That said, I think Reddit has a genuine advantage that Meta, TikTok, and many other platforms struggle to replicate.
People go to Reddit when they are actively researching.
Someone searching “best murky water lure Reddit” or “best standing desk Reddit” is probably much closer to a purchase decision than buddy dozily scrolling a social feed.
The intent is totally different.
In fact, many buying journeys now include the word “Reddit” somewhere along the way.
Consumers increasingly trust regular strangers arguing on forums more than polished brand messaging or AI-generated blog posts.
That alone makes Reddit worth testing.
Not betting on a 7x return or perfect targeting, but because it can get you closer to the moment when buyers are trying to reduce uncertainty before making a decision.
For my Shopify clients, I will test exactly where Reddit recommends: a small retargeting campaign with a modest budget and realistic expectations.
The goal would be finding out whether or not a viable acquisition cost can be achieved on the platform. If so, it can probably be optimized over time.
