One Ad Is Becoming Thousands

The era of “the campaign” is giving way to one of continuous experimentation, where AI creates endless variations and performance picks the winner.

There are parts of marketing I really miss now.

I grew up admiring the great campaigns.

You know, the iconic print ads. The totally unforgettable TV spots.

And the brilliant ideas everyone saw and talked about together.

A single creative concept could define a brand for years and years.

That kind of work isn’t disappearing altogether, but it’s become a way smaller part of marketing.

A jarring new study found the top AI image generators can produce marketing visuals that match or exceed human-created work across many measures, including aesthetics AND ad effectiveness.

In one live advertising test, the best AI-generated image delivered up to a 50% higher click-through rate than the professionally shot stock photo it competed against.

It’s hard to call it “slop” when it just spanked your butt in the real world.

The bigger implication isn’t that AI makes prettier, better converting pics.

It’s that creating another version of an ad has become almost free.

Instead of debating which headline, image or layout is best, marketers can launch hundreds of combinations, let paying customers vote with their clicks, and continuously refine the campaign.

So one ad becomes ten. Ten become a thousand. Every audience can (and will) see something slightly different.

Whether you and I love that direction or not doesn’t change where it’s headed.

Digital marketing has always rewarded performance, and performance tends to win the argument.

That doesn’t mean human creativity has become less valuable.

In fact, I think the opposite is true.

The campaigns that genuinely capture culture, get us talking, and become part of future marketing history are still overwhelmingly conceived by people.

Original ideas, surprising insights, and emotional storytelling (the kind I write about here) remain deeply human strengths.

AI is becoming extraordinary at optimization. No stopping that choo-choo.

But humans are still responsible for deciding what is worth optimizing.

That’s a distinction product makers need to think carefully about.
