Jaguar’s Now a Startup With a Famous Name

Jaguar’s inherited fame gives its reinvention a huge audience, but customers will decide if its EV deserves a future.

The internet rallied to defend the old Jaguar with an enthusiasm its showrooms sure coulda used.

Annual sales had continuously fallen by roughly two-thirds between 2018 and 2023, before the infamous rebrand. Keeping everybody happy with the OLD Jaguar would have been plain stupid.

And now the Type 01 has arrived: an electric grand tourer starting at £130,000, with orders opening in early 2027.

I’m really seeing this as a startup with a famous surname.

It inherits recognition, luxury associations and JLR’s engineering resources, while trying to build a fresh kind of business for a totally different customer.

That frames how I judge the uproar.

Jaguar has recruited an enormous unpaid audience to introduce its reinvention.

Most of the folks circulating the vitriol would never spend that kind of money on ANY damn car, no matter if they love or despise it.

Ferrari’s Luce offers a useful, recent point of reference.

Despite a bruising reception, its 2026 allocation of just under 500 cars sold out in under two months.

That’s an even smaller market, but serving a wealthy prestige-minded EV buyer is the exact assignment for Jaguar too.

The question behind I Need That applies here: what will make a very specific customer want this badly enough to buy? (And to heck with the peanut gallery who will have long ago moved on.)

For Jag, selling a fantastic EV would be a hip place to start. It also needs to be something its intended owners are proud to show up in, and love to drive.

Inherited fame got it a far-reaching intro; NOW the product has to earn its way into gated driveways and valet stands.

So I’m parkin‘ my flamethrower.

Every sh*tpost can give the Type 01 another introduction, although talk comes with 00 purchase obligation.

The real test begins the day folks with the budget can place an order.

I have a feeling that leaping cat is gonna land on its feet.
