ChatGPT Ads is Now a Legit Commerce Channel

Shopify merchants can now set up ChatGPT ads in the platform, but the real story is how AI is changing product discovery.

Shoppers increasingly ask ChatGPT questions like:

What’s the best carry-on for a two-week trip?
Which office chair works well for someone 6’2″?
What should I buy my kid who loves drawing?

Now merchants can pay to show up inside that decision process, and do it in an easy way.

This week OpenAI launched ChatGPT Ads for Shopify, cementing its first ecommerce partnership for the ad platform.

U.S.-based merchants can connect their catalog, set budgets, build campaigns and track performance from Shopify.

International access is rolling out this week in markets like Canada where ChatGPT Ads are available.

The big thing here is where those ads now appear in the buying journey.

Google catches people after they’ve formed a search query. Meta often introduces products while people scroll.

ChatGPT can post itself in the middle, while someone is still noodling out what they need, discussing with a partner, comparing options and narrowing the field.

That makes product data way more important.

A listing that says “Premium ergonomic office chair” gives an AI system precious little to work with.

A listing that says “High-back ergonomic chair for users 6’–6’5″, with adjustable lumbar support, 4D armrests and a 300 lb weight rating” gives it a much clearer reason to show the product in the ideal conversation.

That lesson applies way beyond Shopify.

As product discovery shifts more and more into AI, structured information turns into part of your marketing infrastructure: dimensions, compatibility, materials, use cases, who the product is for, and what makes it special to those folks.

The machine has to understand all that before it can confidently pop your product in front of the right shopper.

For Shopify merchants, it’s time to experiment carefully.

Early ad platforms often reward people who learn before the market gets crowded, but I’d treat this as a test channel rather than a gold rush.

Start small. Watch what kinds of queries produce useful traffic. See if AI-referred shoppers act differently from search or social visitors.

See what converts, and what that costs ya.

One of the ideas I get into in I Need That is that products get adopted when buyers can quickly envision why one great thing fits their need.

ChatGPT Ads pushes that requirement one big step earlier.

BUT your product has to make sense to the AI first.
