Buying Has Moved Into the Chat

The new place where customers discover (and buy) products is a chat.

Shopify had a HUGE week, but one update blows the others away.

Your products can now be discovered and purchased directly inside AI chats, including ChatGPT.

And that changes the shape of commerce.

Instead of searching, clicking, comparing, and navigating a storefront, a customer can ask a question and move straight to a product.

No tabs, no browsing journey.

From conversation to checkout, just like that. (Like chat?)

Shopify is making this possible by extending its product catalog into AI environments, carrying over key elements like product pages, pricing, bundles, and payment systems such as Shop Pay.

There is an important nuance I’m not seeing in most of the reports.

This is not automatic for every store.

Merchants need their catalog properly structured and eligible, and in some cases may need to opt into newer distribution frameworks.

Shopify’s newer “agentic” approach allows products to be surfaced through AI systems, but only when the data is clean, complete, and accessible.

Those things lead to the big kaboom. (In a good way.)

Discovery is no longer driven by ads or search rankings alone.

It will now be driven by how well your product can be understood by an AI system.

That means your titles, descriptions, images, and structure are no longer just merchandising tools.

Those things become your interface with the customer.

Bad or messy data goes from hurting SEO to making you totally invisible.

To me this feels a lot like the early days of Google Shopping feeds.

The brands that treated their product data seriously showed up first.

The majority followed later and paid a ton to catch up.

That same kind of window is cracking open again. Shopping habits are being formed from nothing, inside AI right now.

The brands that show up early in these conversations are the only ones customers will know, forget about remember.
