AI Shoppers Convert Twice as Much

New Shopify data shows shoppers arriving through AI are growing fast, and converting WAY more than human ones.

If you still think agentic shopping is something marketers can worry about in a few years, Shopify just supplied some numbers you should see.

Its Q2 data compares shoppers referred by AI with those arriving through organic search.

AI-referred sessions grew 197% year over year, versus 12% for organic search, albeit from a much smaller base.

But traffic growth isn’t the part that grabbed me.

When AI-referred shoppers reach a product page, they convert about 80% better than organic search visitors.

For watches, it’s 2.4X. Necklaces, 2.3X. And apparel overall, 1.6X.

And half of AI-referred sessions land directly on a product page.

Think about what’s happening before that click.

Some lady or dude isn’t searching “best watches” and opening 14 tabs. They’re telling an AI what they need, supplying criteria, asking questions, comparing tradeoffs and narrowing the possibilities.

So by the time AI sends them to your product (if it does), the consideration process has already happened.

I wrote in I Need That about how customers rarely begin by wanting our products. They begin with something they want to accomplish, solve, improve or become.

AI search makes understanding that need even more important because shoppers can now describe it in extraordinary detail.

That changes what your product pages need to communicate.

Specs, compatibility, materials, fit, use cases, reviews, FAQs, delivery information and comparisons are all part of the evidence AI can use to determine whether your product deserves to be recommended.

Structured product data becomes especially important. According to Shopify’s data, AI sessions drawing on structured Catalog data converted twice as well as those relying on scraped or third-party feeds.

We’re moving from optimizing product information for people searching with keywords to making products understandable to machines reasoning about human needs.

SEO isn’t going anywhere, yet. Shopify’s numbers show organic search still brings vastly more traffic and remains important for browsing and discovery.

But something real is developing beside it.

Your next customer may never visit your homepage, browse your categories or read your carefully crafted brand story. (Sigh.)

They might just ask an AI what to buy, or have the AI agent buy the thing.
