New research found that more immersive tech doesn’t always mean more buyers.
Every few months, another company announces a bold new virtual reality shopping experience.
The assumption is easy enough to understand.
If customers become more immersed, they’ll become more convinced. Right?
New research says it isn’t that simple.
The researchers found that immersive VR often outperformed desktop-based VR, but only under specific conditions.
When customers could already rotate, inspect, and interact with products on a standard screen, the expensive immersive experience often delivered little additional benefit.
That’s an important distinction.
The question isn’t whether VR is impressive, ’cause it sorta is.
It’s more about if it helps customers make a better buying decision.
Think of IKEA.
If you’re trying to decide whether a sofa fits your living room, being able to rotate it, change the fabric, compare colours, and place it virtually in your home may provide pretty much everything you need.
A headset might make the experience more fun, but not necessarily more persuasive.
One of the ideas I explore in I Need That is that successful products reduce uncertainty.
Customers aren’t always searching for technology.
They’re often probing for confidence.
Sometimes that confidence comes from physically handling a product.
Other times, from seeing the thing in context.
For certain products, a simple interactive website does the job perfectly.
The newest tech isn’t automatically the best investment.
The research argues this: match the experience to the product.
If richer technology doesn’t further understanding, it may only bloat your development budget.
That’s a lesson that extends far beyond virtual reality.
Whether you’re considering AI, augmented reality, or any emerging technology, the first question should be , “Will this help customers make a better decision?”
If the answer is no, simpler is smarter.
