The Biggest Storytelling Mistake Brands Make

New research suggests authenticity alone doesn’t cut it. Winning brand stories match how buyers evaluate the product.

We’ve all heard the advice, and many of us have said it more than once:

“Be authentic.”

It’s definitely one of the most cliché (yet still oft-repeated) words in modern marketing.

It doesn’t go away because it’s right. Buyers crave, need … demand authenticity.

But a new study published in the Journal of Business Research adds an important nuance: authenticity works best when it closely matches the type of product you’re selling.

The researchers found that consumers respond to two different forms of authentic storytelling.

One is built on evidence.

Think real craftsmanship, documented history, manufacturing processes, founder stories, patents, testing, or where materials come from.

The other is built on meaning.

These stories resonate because they align with our experiences, aspirations, and identity, even when they aren’t centred on factual proof.

Both can improve brand attitudes.

The key is knowing WHEN each works best.

For expensive products and products buyers can’t fully evaluate until they’ve lived with them, factual authenticity becomes much more persuasive. As price rises, consumers process claims more carefully and naturally look for evidence that justifies the investment.

That’s why a company like Patagonia spends so much time talking about where its materials come from, how its products can be repaired, and how long they’re designed to last.

Buyers paying premium prices want evidence that supports the investment.

An affordable lifestyle brand, meanwhile, may have more success telling a story about belonging, self-expression, or shared values.

Both stories can be authentic. They’re just authentic in different ways.

This connects directly to I Need That.

The best marketing begins by asking, “What kind of evidence does THIS buyer need to feel comfortable saying yes?”

When the story matches the buying decision, authenticity gets way more persuasive.
