Why Customers Abandon the Pleasurable Stuff

New research shows that when online carts trigger guilt, customers never reach checkout.

A new Journal of Consumer Research study looked at why people abandon online shopping carts, and the finding is important to anyone selling products online.

Cart composition is a thing.

The researchers analyzed large real-world e-commerce datasets in four controlled experiments to understand how cart composition influences abandonment behavior.

Turns out that when a cart contains a higher proportion of hedonic products (stuff that indulges us), customers get more likely to abandon it.

The mechanism at play here is GUILT.

A cart full of scented candles, chocolate truffles, decorative pillows, skincare treats, or other indulgent items starts feeling hard to justify as a whole.

The customer may love, love, LOVE every item individually, yet the combined cart begins to say something unsettling about the decision.

That connects directly with a core idea from I Need That.

Buyers rationalize and fiercely defend the things they perceive as needs. Once something feels necessary, it earns our permission to overcome resistance.

A hedonic cart makes that hard to do.

It needs help becoming defensible, to the buyer or their significant other. (Always watching, right?)

The most practical finding is how utilitarian recommendations can reduce abandonment.

Adding or even suggesting useful, practical items such as protein bars, an exercise shirt, or a water bottle makes the cart feel less indulgent and reduces guilt.

That matters a ton, because many e-commerce recommendation systems optimize for similarity or upsell value. They usually aren’t trying to balance the buyer’s psyche so the deal goes through.

This research points to a really important lens: emotional justification.

The cart has to feel rational and JUSTIFIABLE, not merely craveable.
