Attention used to be delivered. Now you have to earn it, moment by moment.
I wrote recently about how QVC built a powerhouse by creating and perfecting a format that still dominates product selling today.
A host, a product, a time slot, and a guaranteed audience … always watching.
For many years, if you got your product on air, it got seen by a known number of real people. A percentage of those were sure to buy it.
That was the system. The system was good, and very lucrative all around.
Today, the format is similar, but the new system is totally different.
Attention flows through algorithms that rule over what gets seen, by whom, and for how long.
No slot, no guarantee. Not even any certainty how much of the audience is even real humans.
Just performance (whatever that means anymore).
The algorithm is the gatekeeper and ultimate ruler of this brave new land.
It rewards what holds attention and neutralizes what doesn’t. It’s motivated by monetized systems that rake in billions. It makes a small percentage of users rich, and most others invisible.
Dark, sinister, unfair … but terrifyingly powerful.
That changes the role of everyone involved.
Creators have to adjust constantly, shaping how they look, how they speak, how they present products, all in response to signals none can clearly see. The rules change constantly.
Humor, pacing, novelty, and visual appeal become the currency.
Consistency matters, but for only as long as it continues to earn its place.
Products feel the impact directly.
On QVC, the format could carry pretty much any decent product.
Merit mattered, and rewards were distributed fairly evenly if you followed the rules.
Today, the product has to carry ITSELF inside the format. It needs to work quickly, read clearly, and connect without explanation.
The audience has been chopped up and distributed by the algo, which decides in real time what deserves attention.
All that creates a wildly different kind of pressure.
Exposure is conditional. Relevance and interest are immediately visible.
And every moment becomes a cruel test that takes a toll on even the most successful influencers.
How often are you at the mercy of a powerful platform, and what can YOU still control?
