Shake it off: not even Taylor Swift and Kylie Jenner own their Instagram followers.
A few days ago, Instagram carried out what some are calling the “Great Purge of 2026.”
According to reporting from Meta watchers and cybersecurity outlets, millions of fake, inactive, and non-organic accounts vaporized from the platform.
The fallout was instantaneous.
Kylie Jenner reportedly lost more than 15 million followers.
Cristiano Ronaldo lost nearly 7 million.
Taylor Swift lost around 5 million.
Even ordinary creators with purely legit audiences saw meaningful declines.
The interesting part isn’t whether those followers were “real enough.”
It’s the reminder that the platform owns the system. Not a-you.
And that matters lots more than many businesses want to admit.
I often tell founders they need to own their audience wherever possible, whether that means an email list, customer database, retail relationship, or direct online store.
Otherwise you’re building your business on rented land.
Social platforms are crazy-powerful distribution engines, but the rules can change instantly and unilaterally. And, as we just saw, they DO.
Reach can shrink. Algorithms can turn against you. Accounts can disappear.
Even Donald Trump learned that when he was removed from Twitter during a moment of enormous public visibility.
Amazon works similarly.
Many brands believe they “own” their Amazon customers because the sales volume feels substantial.
In reality, Amazon owns the audience, the search behavior, the recommendation engine, and the transaction layer.
The whole enchilada is theirs. Your brand participates inside that ecosystem under rules it does not and never will control.
if you leave (or get booted) you and those buyers are never, ever getting back together.
That doesn’t mean platforms are always bad strategy.
It means they should be treated as borrowed, vulnerable leverage, and not reliable infrastructure.
The businesses that endure usually find ways to convert rented attention into direct relationships they can keep.
How much of your entire audience would still belong to you if the biggest platform shut you out tomorrow?
