The Moment A Product Becomes The Key

Desire intensifies when the future suddenly feels reachable.

In I Need That, I explain something I call the Coveted Condition™.

We feel compelled to buy when we can clearly see a product as the key to a future state we really, really want.

Not the actual thing we pay for and hold in our hands.

It’s the version of ourselves that comes out the other side when we use that product.

The answer to “Who will this help me become?”

Probably happier.

Fitter?

More capable?

Less stressed?

Admired?

Promoted?

Chosen?

Think how Lululemon positions its apparel.

The campaigns are pretty much never about fabric durability or their flat stitching technique (for which founder Chip Wilson was a true innovator).

They show disciplined, composed people in motion:

Early morning light, focused expression, community classes and personal bests.

The clothing is right there, but the narrative is all about transformation.

You are not comparison shopping leggings, but are stepping into a life that promises momentum and self-command.

That right there’s the Coveted Condition at work.

The product is framed as the bridge between who you are and who you want to be.

When that bridge feels believable, desire is irresistible. It gets into your dreams, and daydreams.

When it feels exaggerated, the spell breaks.

So many product teams underinvest in this translation layer. They polish features, debate, refine packaging.

All important and valuable.

But the work that unlocks compulsion is clarity around the future state.

What does product ownership say to others?

What does usage change long-term in the customer’s life?

What identity becomes available?

If the customer cannot see themselves across that bridge, the product is still optional.

When they can, it is necessary.

What is the most powerful Coveted Condition you’ve found yourself chasing?

Happy Easter!
